En primer er det første steget til en jevn og holdbar sminke. Det er det første steget i sminkerutinen. Selv om primerens hovedformål er å legge et godt og stabilt grunnlag for de resterende sminkeproduktene dine, kan de ha individuelle egenskaper. Hvilken av disse egenskapene du bør velge avhenger i stor grad av hudtypen din og hvilket sluttresultat du er ute etter. Om du har fet hud kan du velge en primer som reduserer glans og minsker synligheten av porer. Har du i stedet tørr hud kan du velge en primer som fukter og gir glød. Kombinert hud kan få best resultat av å bruke ulike primere på ulike områder i ansiktet. Det vil si at du for eksempel er oljete i T-sonen (panne - nese - hake) og tørr i resten av ansiktet.
